1) As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann. My favorite book from last year! It's a torrid m/m romance/psychological mystery of sorts set in Cromwellian England! The language is beautiful, the emotions are dark yet frighteningly familiar, the protagonist is both loathed and loved. The sex sometimes gives it a feel of an amateur slash story, where lots of sex is in there just for the sake of being in there because that's what the author wanted to write at the time, but overall, it's a great book.
2) A Night in the Lonesome October by Roger Zelazny. Good luck finding this one in stores! I hunted around for a long time until I found (by chance!) a paperback copy in Grand Forks. But plot: there's the Game, there's two sides to the Game (Openers and Closers), there are materials needed to be collected for the Game, and finally, there's the night of the Game. Told from the perspective of Snuff, the animal companion of Jack the Ripper, over the course of the month of October. Special appearances by all your favorite movie monsters and a few Lovecraftian horrors.
3) A Song of Ice and Fire Saga by George RR Martin. I could have populated this list with four of the five books, but I decided instead to lump them altogether. Why? Because once you finish one, you HAVE to read the others. It's just that amazing.
4) Nerd Do Well: A Small Boy's Journey to Becoming a Big Kid by Simon Pegg. I haven't read this one yet, but I plan on picking it up after I finish A Dance with Dragons. I have high expectation to be wildly entertained.
