FELLOW CAT OWNERS - I have a question

I have this cat. She isn't even mine. She belongs to my mom, who insists that this cat stays indoors along with my cat, who gets along with her more than 70% of the time. This cat is stupidly sweet, but she's also a monster She eats a ton of food (which I pay for), has ripped a HUGE hole in these gauzy curtains that are over 20 years old (which I have to replace), and chews on nearly all the cords to all my electronics in my room.

Today, when I went to turn on my XBox, the video wouldn't display on the tv. The sound worked just fine, though. After messing around with the HDAV cable, I figured out the problem: the cat had chewed it up to the point where there was a fault in the wire somewhere. Now, I have to buy a new HDAV cable.

Yeah, I should probably confront my mom about this and ask for compensation (it's her damn cat), but she has this way of slithering out of things like this and placing the responsibility on me. She already said that if I move out, I have to take her cat with me. Ahahahahaha - no. Dealing with mom is very tiring.

Anyhow, question: HOW do I get this damn cat to stop chewing on my cords? I've already tried offering her alternatives (toys), but she always goes back to the cords.

Hi

Try bubblewrap. It's a schlep to wrap up all the cables she can get to, but she will not like the bite/chew...POP! effect. The curtains... Does she have a scratch post? As for eating a lot, she might just be bored, or if she's drinking a lot as well, good bet is to ask your vet to check her out. Generally cats self-regulate as far as food is concerned, even spayed/neutered cats, and if they don't, there's a psych/physio problem somewhere.

Hope that's helpful. Enjoy the rest of your day :)

Good questions...

My cat loves food, but I measure out what he eats (breakfast, a snack & dinner with the occasional couple of treats a few times a week) so he doesn't get more than that. My mom is a vet though, so I have a definite advantage in taking care of my cat. Drinking a lot can be a sign of something wrong.

Depends on when you're around, but if you see her chewing on the cords, you could use a can of compressed air to blow at her. My cat hates that and it doesn't hurt him or anything else. Otherwise, yeah, the only thing I can think of is wrapping the cords in something. Ooo, or maybe someone makes a spray that doesn't taste good to cats that you could put on them.

Tape the cord along the edge of the wall. If it doesn't move the cat usually will avoid it. Also they make cord protectors for households with cats, but i don't know how well they work.
